SCOTS holidaymakers will boost the UK economy by £330million this year with a record number choosing to take a break here rather than go abroad.

Two-thirds are planning a "staycation" over the coming months and more than half are choosing to head for the British coast, new research has revealed.

Blackpool is the top destination for those holidaying by the sea, according to the Travelodge holiday index, followed by Argyll & The Isles, the Galloway coast and Cornwall.

City breaks are also very popular with thousands heading for the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh, Glasgow and London, while others plan to take in stunning countryside in the Highlands, Ayrshire & Arran and Lake District.

The survey of 1,000 Scots revealed a typical family will take a one-week holiday as well as four shorter breaks in 2016, while a fifth will take a "traditional" fortnight-long break.

And we are preparing to spend more than ever on UK holidays this year - splashing an average of £808.64 on trips - delivering a £330m boost to the economy - a significant increase on £216m last year.

More than half of those polled said staycation breaks provided great value, with 35 per cent saying value was the most important factor in booking a holiday.

But half admitted that their holiday is the one thing that they simply refuse to cut back on.

Eighty-six per cent of Edinburgh residents plan to take a UK break this year, 78 per cent of those in Glasgow and 77 per cent of those in Perth.
