Not so long ago travel companies were going all out to woo the silver pound (the spending power of wealthy retirees). Then it was the DINKY pound (dual income, no kids yet), then the pink pound (gay travellers). Now, the chase is on to nab a new and discerning group - the hound pound.
A growing demand from dog owners, for whom a holiday just isn’t a holiday without their dog friend in tow, has seen ferry operators, cottage agencies and hoteliers falling over themselves to prove their dog-friendly credentials. According to Emma Seymour-Sloan of the operator holidaycottages.co.uk, over 34 per cent of their customers took a pet on holiday with them in the UK last year. An increasing number are also taking their dogs and pets further afield.
The UK pet industry is now worth more than £2.7 billion annually and pet travel is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the travel market. Nearly all British cottage agencies have a search option for dog-friendly properties (see telegraph.co.uk/cottageguide). And more and more British hotels are stocking up on dog biscuits and fluffy pet beds (not to mention air fresheners and powerful vacuum cleaners) to get in on the action.

In fact, there seems to be no limit to the type of holiday available to more adventurous canines - from boating with Hoseasons and glamping with Cool Camping to cottages in Anglesey to the bright lights of a city break as increasing numbers of urban hotels provide dog-friendly rooms; the St Pancras Renaissance hotel in London, for instance, will soon be offering Bark Box gift sets to visiting dogs, and hotel butlers to provide walkies around the neighbourhood.
